Films were first shown at this Johannisthal corner around 1924, in a restaurant hall, and the Astra-Filmpalast opened here in 1928 with 510 seats. It survived the war and the GDR years, and in 1996 a family bought it. They replaced the old building in 1998 with today's five-screen cinema behind a curved glass front.
The halls range from 107 to 249 seats; hall 4 is the largest and the only one with a curtain. This is a neighbourhood cinema run by a family rather than a chain, with the latest releases and plenty of family films. The foyer is covered in posters and press cuttings.
