Central-Kino Berlin
About this cinema
Central opened in 1996 as a two-screen cinema in the courtyard of Haus Schwarzenberg, a heritage-protected building in Mitte that once housed a DEFA-linked brush workshop where a Jewish family was hidden during the war. The cinema has run continuously since opening, with new operators taking over management in 2013.
Original-language screenings dominate the programme, alongside long-running late-night slots and festival premieres for BerlinBeta. In summer the courtyard becomes an open-air cinema ringed by street art. A weekend children's programme sits alongside Studio Ghibli retrospectives and arthouse titles that draw Mitte's cinephile crowd.
