Kino International

Karl-Marx-Allee 33, 10178 Berlin

About this cinema

Kino International opened on Karl-Marx-Allee in November 1963 after two years of construction, becoming East Berlin's premier venue for DEFA premieres and state occasions. Its single 506-seat auditorium has been under heritage protection since 1990. A full renovation closed the house for roughly eighteen months before it reopened on 26 February 2026.

The panorama bar upstairs, with its glass-pearl chandeliers and skyline view, is as much a draw as the film. The house has hosted Berlinale screenings since 1990 and the queer film night Mongay since 1997 — it's the rare Berlin cinema built around one large premiere-style hall rather than a multiplex.
