Kino Krokodil Berlin
About this cinema
A cinema was built into this Greifenhagener Straße address in 1912 and opened in February 1914; it ran under various names, briefly as "Nord" under the Yorck cinema group's earlier ownership, until closing in 1963 amid TV competition, then again from 1998 to 2001. It reopened in April 2004 as Krokodil, focused on Russian and Eastern European film.
The programme runs original-language screenings with subtitles for Berlin's roughly 110,000 residents from former Soviet countries alongside arthouse regulars — some nights draw an almost entirely Russian-speaking crowd. Short films still run from 35mm prints via the DEFA Foundation. In 2007 the cinema won the Robert Bosch Foundation's prize for German-Russian civic engagement.
