Toni Berlin
About this cinema
Toni was built as a cinema in 1920, opening as the Decla-Lichtspiele with around 700 seats before becoming a UFA-Theater the following year. Closed by East German authorities in the 1970s, it was renovated in the 1990s and reopened in January 1997 with two screens; a 2007 fire destroyed the smaller hall, which was rebuilt within months.
Programming runs from arthouse and documentary — often followed by discussion — to children's films, Royal Opera House relays and festival screenings, with occasional subtitled original-version showings. All halls project on 35mm, and the venue doubles as a neighborhood cultural center for concerts, readings and talks.
