Lichtblick-Kino Berlin
About this cinema
Lichtblick-Kino traces back to Stattkino Berlin e.V. in 1994 and has run since 1998 in a Mietshaus at Kastanienallee 77 — built in 1852–53 and listed in Berlin's Denkmaldatenbank — previously a butcher's shop. At roughly 50 square metres and 32 seats, it's one of Berlin's smallest cinemas, equipped for 35mm, 16mm and D-Cinema projection.
Many screenings run in the original language, with or without subtitles, spanning arthouse, retrospectives, documentary, shorts and the avant-garde; weekend afternoons belong to children's films. It's collectively run without state funding or advertising, and every 22 February the house marks Luis Buñuel's birthday — a fixture for Prenzlauer Berg's cinephile regulars.
