Odeon
About this cinema
Opened in 1950 as the Sylvia-Filmbühne, a neighbourhood premiere cinema, the venue passed to Yorck Kinogruppe in 1982 and was renamed Odeon in 1985, when it switched to English-language films in original version only — a pioneering move among Berlin cinemas at the time. It seats 359 in a single hall, upgraded to digital projection in 2012 and renovated in 2021.
The programme centers on English-language originals plus subtitled classics from directors such as Almodóvar and Chabrol, and the cinema has hosted Berlinale Goes Kiez three times. A lobby wall of celebrity birthday messages and American-style concessions like popcorn and brownies give it a distinctive, old-school character among Berlin's original-version houses.
