Passage
About this cinema
Built in 1908 as a social hall, the building opened as the Excelsior cinema in 1910 and was renamed Passage in 1920. It closed in 1968 during Berlin's cinema crisis and spent two decades as a furniture warehouse before Yorck Kinogruppe reopened it in 1989. It now has four screens, the landmark-protected original hall dressed in stucco and red velvet.
The programme moved from mainstream releases in the 1990s toward arthouse and European cinema, with OmU screenings, sneak previews, and a children's programme drawing over 3,000 young visitors a year. A café was added to the foyer in the 2021 renovation. Access is level to the foyer; halls 2 through 4 are reached by stairs only.
