THALIA – DAS PROGRAMMKINO POTSDAM
About this cinema
Potsdam's Thalia opened on 16 February 1918 in a former restaurant and concert hall where screenings had reportedly run since 1912, making it, per German Wikipedia, one of Germany's oldest continuously operating cinemas. Closed briefly in April 1945, it reopened the same year and was rebuilt into a four-screen, 709-seat house in 1997.
The programme leans arthouse and has won national recognition, including a 2015 award for Germany's best annual film programme. A bar, Konsum, sits inside the cinema — a fitting stop in a house that has outlasted five different political systems on the same site.
