Tilsiter Lichtspiele Berlin
About this cinema
Tilsiter Lichtspiele has operated from a Friedrichshain apartment-building ground floor since 1908, making it Berlin's second-oldest cinema after Moviemento. Closed under the GDR in 1961, it stood empty for decades — used partly as a film studio — before reopening in 1994. A second, smaller screen was added in 2015.
Come for repertory arthouse and documentary programming from Europe, America and Asia, alongside classics, with non-German films generally shown in their original version. The attached Kneipe out front is as much a fixture as the screening rooms behind it, and the venue has won the federal government's film programming prize every year since 2008.
