Zoo Palast
About this cinema
Films were first shown on this site by the Zoo in 1915, and Metropolis premiered here in 1927. Today's Zoo Palast opened on 28 May 1957 and was the Berlinale's main competition cinema until 1999. It closed at the end of 2010, and reopened in November 2013 with its two listed halls restored and five new ones.
The curved façade of pale yellow ceramic tiles, once hung with hand-painted film posters, is a West Berlin landmark and a listed monument. Since 2014 the Berlinale has used the house again. Around 1,700 seats spread over seven halls, in the Zentrum am Zoo a few steps from Zoologischer Garten station.
