Father Mother Sister Brother

To family relations!
Remember David Lynch's pandemic weather reports? Sunglasses on indoors, that steady cheerful voice: "I'm wearing dark glasses today, because I'm seeing the future and it's looking very bright." Jarmusch's new film runs on that same frequency, and he keeps the glasses on while looking at the most stereotyped subject there is — family. Parents, children, siblings, the visits you're supposed to make.
It won the Golden Lion at Venice, where Jarmusch described it as a quiet film. Three stories, three cities: New Jersey, Dublin, Paris. In each one, siblings go to see their parents. That's the whole architecture, and Jarmusch gets an unreasonable amount out of it.
The cast is absurd. Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Vicky Krieps, Indya Moore, and every one of them plays it small. Watch it with nowhere to be afterwards: a comedy that refuses to be sentimental about family and still leaves you wanting to call someone.
